After a century of voting right to the women: politics and economics for gender equality

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of women’s right to vote nation-wide
in the United States. Following decades of advocacy efforts and hard-fought legal battles, the nineteenth
amendment became part of the US Constitution on August 18, 1920, introducing national suffrage for all
Americans irrespective of sex. The event is regarded by feminist movements worldwide as a landmark
achievement in modern history, and it set the tone for various other advancements that marked the broader
battle for women’s rights throughout the 20th century. One hundred years on, a lot of progress has been made
and yet a lot remains to be done at all levels – political, economic, and socio-cultural, among others. This panel
will bring together distinguished speakers representing governments, international organizations, academia
and the private sector, with the aim of taking stock of progress made so far and of priorities ahead (including
in the light of COVID-19) in the never-ending battle for gender equality worldwide.
